Roulette odds: payouts vs true probability
Casinos pay close to fair odds — not quite. That small gap, multiplied across every spin, is the house edge. Learn the numbers once and strategy claims get easier to judge.
Odds have two sides: the chance you hit, and the price you are paid. On a fair game those match. In roulette, payouts are set as if zeros were not fully priced in.
Even-money bets look like coin flips but are not: 18 winning numbers out of 37 (European) or 38 (American). Straight-up pays 35:1 while a fair European price would be 36:1.
Even-money odds (red/black, odd/even, high/low)
Each of these bets covers 18 numbers and pays 1:1. European probability: 18/37 ≈ 48.65%. American: 18/38 ≈ 47.37%. House edge: about 2.70% (European) vs 5.26% (American).
With La Partage or En Prison on eligible French-rule tables, even-money edge can fall to about 1.35% because zero results return half the stake or imprison the bet for one more spin — always confirm local rules.
Dozens and columns
Dozens (1–12, 13–24, 25–36) and columns each cover 12 numbers and typically pay 2:1. Probability is 12/37 or 12/38. The edge remains the same order of magnitude as other standard bets on that wheel — zeros still do the damage.
Inside bets at a glance
Straight-up (one number): pays 35:1; chance 1/37 or 1/38. Split (two numbers): 17:1. Street (three): 11:1. Corner (four): 8:1. Six-line: 5:1. Higher payouts come with lower hit rates; edge direction stays negative.
American wheels also offer a five-number “basket” (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) with a worse edge than other standard bets — many guides flag it as a bet to skip.
How odds interact with betting systems
Martingale does not raise the probability of the next spin. It only increases the amount at risk after losses. Flat betting makes the edge visible without stake explosions. Use odds as the baseline whenever a system claims “you only need one win.”
