Layout and pocket counts

European: numbers 1–36 plus a single green 0. American: 1–36 plus 0 and 00. That second green pocket is why American even-money bets lose more often without a higher payout.

French roulette usually uses the single-zero wheel too, sometimes with racetrack-style announced bets and special zero rules. Always separate “wheel type” from “table rules.”

Even-money bets: European ≈ 2.70%, American ≈ 5.26%, French even-money with La Partage/En Prison ≈ 1.35% when those rules apply. On standard European play, edge is broadly similar across common bet types; American basket bets can be harsher still.

Over a long night the difference compounds. $1,000 of even-money action expects roughly $27 loss (European) versus about $53 (American) before luck variance.

Impact on strategies and practice

Progressions such as Martingale fail faster when the edge is higher: losing runs are slightly more frequent and bankroll pressure rises. Practice systems on single-zero rules if you can, and never ignore table maximums.

For learning, log the same flat strategy on both wheel types in a simulator or short live samples — the edge difference shows up as faster bankroll decay on double-zero, not as a different “due” color pattern.
